The Pomsky is a cross between the Pomeranian and the Husky. Another variation of the spelling of Pomsky is Pomski.
This is a relatively new ‘designer’ dog, which also goes by the name of Huskeranian in some breeding circles.
These dogs are bred by specialist breeders, and care needs to be taken when purchasing these popular breeds as there are a few breeders who claim their puppies are Pomskies when they are not.
Reputable and responsible breeders breed the male Pomeranian with the female Husky because there is a danger of health complications if done vice versa due to the smaller dog carrying the pups of a much larger dog.
Additionally, the Pomsky is a much-coveted designer dog because of its size, and therefore this is another reason why a male Husky is not used as they are considerably larger than the female.
Appearance
The Pomsky puppy can vary in appearance depending on the content of the Husky and Pomeranian.
Most people who want to buy a Pomsky prefer it to have Husky markings. Colors of the Pomsky vary, and they can be found in gray, red, black, brown, and cream.
These dogs can have different kinds of markings, and they can typically be parti, sable, or solid in color. Other than their coats, the eye color also varies, and they can be brown, green, amber, husky blue, or hazel.
It is also not uncommon for the Pomsky to have two different colored eyes.
The Pomsky’s coat is of a medium length, which has a full downy undercoat. The appearance of the Pomsky’s coat is soft and fluffy, which is how it earned the nickname of a ‘teddy bear’ dog.
Another distinct feature of the Pomsky is its erect ears, which it inherits from the Husky parent.
Pomsky Temperament
The Pomeranian Husky mix is known for its diligence and good behavior. It is an intelligent dog that makes it relatively easy to train.
Both the Pomeranian and the Siberian husky are loyal dogs, and this trait is transferred to their offspring.
These alert dogs are playful and outgoing and love to spend time playing with their owners which makes them the perfect playmate for children.
Pomeranian Husky Mix Size
The Pomeranian Husky mix is a medium sized dog and when full-grown they usually weigh between 15-20lbs (6.8-9kg).
The Teacup version is much smaller and weighs approximately 2lbs (0.9kg).
Pomsky Health Problems
The Pomsky has no known medical conditions; however, they can inherit the Pomeranian’s dental problems, which are usually caused by the buildup of plaque that can result in tooth loss.
To avoid this, Pomskies should have annual dental cleaning from the vet.
While the Teacup version of the Pomsky is sweet and even cuter than the full-grown Pomsky, they are usually more prone to illness due to them often being the runt of the litter.
If cared for properly, the average life expectancy of the Pomsky is 14 years, and the litter size is usually between 5-7 pups.
Living Conditions
It is acceptable to keep this dog indoors if you have a larger apartment or house. However, these dogs can be active, and they do need to have time outdoors, so really, a backyard is ideal.
They do not deal well with heat due to their heavier coats but they do not have any problem with the cold as the Husky is from cooler conditions and they are acclimatized to such conditions.
Pomsky Exercise
The Pomsky is an active dog with a lot of energy and it needs to be walked on a regular basis – ideally twice a day.
They learn games quickly, and they respond well to games like fetch.
The Pomsky would also benefit from a basic obedience course so it can learn basic commands from the beginning.
The Pomeranian Husky Mix needs, on average, forty-five minutes of exercise a day. This can be in the form of walks, runs, dog park play, and so much more.
Pomeranian Husky Mix Diet
You should be feeding your Pomsky a high-quality dog food coming from a good source of protein.
The meat protein ingredient should be one of the first few ingredients listed. Make sure it is a quilty protein without saying meat by-product.
Your Pomsky will need around two and a half cups of dog food a day broken up into smaller meals.
This will typically cost you around $1.25 to $1.50 a day per dog you have.
Pomeranian Husky mixes have a ton of energy, which means they are burning a ton of energy when they play. You will need good quality food to replace the calories lost.
Life Expectancy of a Pomeranian Husky Mix
Even though this hybrid breed has only been created in the past twenty years, experts were still able to give people a rough estimate of how long the Pomeranian Husky might live.
This hybrid dog breed has quite a long life. This breed can live from around thirteen years to even sometimes fifteen years.
This quite a long time compared to some other dog breeds.
Pomsky Grooming
This dog is a high shedding dog, and it needs to be brushed on a daily basis with a soft bristle brush to get rid of the dead fur and ensure its coat remains shiny and fluffy.
This dog only requires occasional baths when they get very dirty. Baths can dry out your Pomsky’s skin.
This breeds hair grows very long, so they should be taken to the grommet to get their hair cut every few months. They get this trait from the Pomeranian parent.
Also, check your dog’s nails and see if they need to be trimmed periodically.
Origin
Well, as you know already from reading this article the Pomsky is a crossbreed from a Pomeranian and a Husky combined.
These breeds date back a long time ago and have a deep history, but this mix breed has only been around for the past twenty years.
The breed really started gaining popularity among a bunch of people in 2011.
Now you can find breeders that you can get a Pomsky puppy from.
What Colors Do They Come In?
There are a few different color options when it comes to the Pomsky, they are:
- Fawn
- Brown
- Cream
- White
- Gray
- Black
Your dog could either have a black or brown nose. There are also four different possibilities with eye colors, they are blue, hazel, brown, and amber.
Cool Traits / Characteristics?
Some cool things that I have learned about the Pomsky is that their coat is very thick so they stay warmer than other dog breeds.
They actually work really great in apartment living even though they are more of a large breed dog, they don’t mind spaces without a lot of room.
Just make sure if you do live in a small home or apartment that you are still taking your dog out regularly for exercise.
This breed of dog is very intelligent, so you can train them very easily. Try and make early socialization a priority for your dog around people and also other dogs.
Pomeranian Husky Mix Puppies
When the Pomeranian and the Husky are bed together the female is usually the Husky because of the fact that it would be harder for a female Pomeranian to carry puppies this size.
The female will typically have five to seven puppies in a litter. There could be more or less, too; this is just the general amount.
Each puppy can come out looking different from the others. Pomeranians and Huskys have very different looks so when they are bred together you don’t really know what your gonna get in your puppy.
Close Relatives of Pomeranian Husky Mix
There isn’t many relatives to the Pomsky besides the parent breeds.
- Pomeranian
- Husky
Suitability
The Pomsky is an ideal dog for families as it plays well with children and will often act as their protector keeping them safe.
Since this is a high shedding dog, it is not ideal for those people who suffer from allergies.
It is also not an ideal dog for the elderly as it requires energy, and if it cannot be walked or played with on a daily basis, it can sometimes get destructive.

From a Backyard Breeder or puppy mill.
