The Schnauzer Poodle Mix aka the Schnoodle

Schnauzer Poodle MixThe Schnoodle is a hybrid dog breed that is popular throughout the world. It is a mix between the Schnauzer and the Poodle, and it comes in a variety of colors.

This is an adorable dog with a calm and loving nature, which is why it has found its place in society and become a popular family dog. Its loving temperament and its fierce loyalty to human beings makes this a wonderful therapy dog as well.

They are a highly intelligent dog, which makes it very easy to train them, and this is also why they are such popular performing dogs. This is a playful and very lovable dog, but at the same time, it likes to be at the center of attention.

The Schnoodle was specially designed to be a low-shedding dog, and its coat resembles that of a Schnauzer puppy’s coat, which is soft and wavy. Due to the great variety of colors, its parents can come in, and the Schnoodle comes in a number of colors including black, white, gray, silver, brown, sable, tan, black and white, and apricot.

This is a new hybrid dog, and it came about in the ’80s when there was an increased interest in Poodle mixed breeds.

Schnauzer Poodle Mix History

This breed was first mixed in the 1980s. The goal was to create a dog that does not shed very much as well as it won’t produce a lot of dander.

They have certainly achieved this goal with this mix of a Schnauzer and a Poodle.

This mixed breed has not been recognized by any kennel clubs or associations.

It is unknown who specifically started to breed these two breeds together; we are sure glad they did to make this incredible mixed breed.

Schnauzer Poodle Mix Appearance

This mixed breed can vary in appearance depending on which traits the puppy takes from each parent. This breed does come in toy, poodle, and even miniature size.

This is a naturally very fluffy dog and quite round. You will notice this dog has a very short muzzle.

The ears of the Schnoodle hand down to the side of the face. The coat of the dog is a mix of wavy and curly. This mixed breed does not shed as much as other breeds. You can consider this breed to be a more low maintenance shedder.

Schnoodle Size

The Schnoodle dog comes in a variety of different sizes, especially since there are three different sizes for both the full-bred Poodle and the Schnauzer.

Traditionally, the Schnoodle is a smaller dog, but recently when crossing the Standard Poodle with the Giant Schnauzer, the result has been a bigger Schnoodle.

Although there are a number of size variations for both the Schnauzer and the Poodle, the Schnoodle tends to weigh around 20 pounds or less.

Generally, a Schnoodle could come in three different variations like its parents:

• Toy Schnoodles are approximately 10-12 inches tall and weigh 6-10 pounds.
• Miniature Schnoodles are approximately 12-15 inches tall and weigh 13-20 pounds.
• Standard Schnoodles are approximately 15-26 inches tall and weigh 20-75 pounds.

Schnauzer Poodle Mix Coat

The coat of the Schnoodle is very interesting. It is quite short and fluffy. You will notice the coat can be quite wavy or very curly.

This can vary a lot, depending on which traits your puppy will get.

The coat is very short, and this breed does not shed a lot or lose a lot of dander.

This is something great for people who suffer from allergies that this dog mixed breed is so hypoallergenic.

Schnoodle Health Problems

Generally, as a mixed-breed dog, the Schnoodle is healthy and does not have problems; however, as both its parents are pure-bred, it is possible to inherit genetic diseases from them.

When adopting or purchasing a Schnoodle, it is imperative you locate a good dog breed that will be able to give your dog the all-clear.

If a Schnoodle inherits an illness from either one of its parents, it is most likely to suffer from elbow dysplasia, hip dysplasia, von Willebrand’s disease, or hyperthyroidism.

Schnoodle Life Span

When you mix breeds together, it can sometimes get scary because you don’t know how long the breed is expected to live.

This mixed breed can live anywhere from ten to twelve years. Some Schnoodles have been known to live even up to fourteen years long.

Remember that your dog’s life span can vary from dog to dog. Remember if you ever have concerns to take your dog to a vet to get looked at.

Schnoodle Temperament

A Schnoodle that has been well bred is a happy and loyal companion. Both its parents have a high intelligence level, which is passed down to its offspring.

This is the perfect family dog as it loves to have fun and play lots of games. As a loyal dog, it is protective of its master and family, and for this reason, it also makes a good watchdog.

A Schnoodle does not adapt well to change, which is why it is sometimes difficult to adopt an older dog. It can sometimes be suspicious towards humans and other dogs, which is why it is important to socialize it with people and other animals early – this socialization will ensure that your dog grows up to be a well-behaved dog.

Schnauzer Poodle MixSchnoodle Grooming and Exercise

The amount of grooming and brushing of your Schnoodle’s coat will depend on which coat it has inherited from its parents. It can either have a softer coat with looser curls like the Poodle or a wiry coat with tighter curls like the Schnauzer.

If the Schnoodle takes after the Poodle parent more, it should have its coat brushed one to two times a week to prevent it from getting tangled. If the dog takes after its Schnauzer parent more with a wiry coat, its coat will need brushing less, however, it is a good idea to keep trimming it to keep it looking tidy.

Additionally, the Schnoodle will need to be bathed more than the average dog to maintain its coat. After washing, dry its coat with a hairdryer and comb it at the same time to help prevent tangling.

A Schnoodle’s ears have the tendency to get a buildup of dirt, so it is a good idea to check them on a weekly basis for any sign of redness or a strange smell that could indicate infection. Use a damp cotton ball with either warm water or a pH-balanced ear cleaner to keep the ears clean and prevent future ear infections.

If your Schnoodle does not get the opportunity to wear down its nails naturally while walking and running on concrete surfaces, you will need to trim its nails yourself. This will prevent yourself getting scratched as your pet Schnoodle could have the tendency to jump on you enthusiastically out of excitement.

A Schnoodle requires moderate exercise. It needs between 30-60 minutes of light exercise a day, such as a slow jog or a brisk walk.

Schnoodle Training

Both the Schnauzer and the Poodle are easily trained therefore you should have no problem training your Schnoodle.

Schnoodles need to be socialized with other dogs, and if you do not wish for your dog to yap at visitors, this needs to be controlled from early on.
