This extremely cute dog breed is a designer breed mixed with Afghan hound and a Labrador. This dog breed first originated in Alaska for their hunting and fishing skills!
The afador has become extremely popular over the past decade, gaining more and more popularity. Even though it is gaining a lot of popularity they are still hard to find in the states.
People fell in love with this crossbreed because of its affectionate and loyal behavior.
This breed not only helps hunt, but they can do other things as well because of their intelligence like police work, search, and rescue, etc.
Check out the article below on the Afador: Afghan hound and Labrador mix designer breed.
Afador Size
The average male Afador’s height is somewhere between twenty-seven inches to twenty-nine inches. This can vary depending on what traits they inherit from their parents, but this is the average this breed got.
The female Afador’s height is around twenty-five to twenty-seven inches. The average weight for this breed is somewhere around 55 to 70 pounds.
This is definitely a larger dog and will not be lying on your lap as a small dog would. This will vary of course on your type of dog.
This breed has a great life expectancy better than most breeds of dogs. It is between ten to twelve years.
Afghan hound and Labrador Mix Personality
The Afador is a very brave and intelligent dog. This type of dog was originally bred for hunting pray whether it is on the water or in the woods.
They are not afraid to take command, and you will be surprised how fast they learn. Even though this breed can be very serious, they are just like other dogs who want love and affection.
They also will give you a big deal of love and affection right back to you. They are loyal to their owners and will listen to whatever you have to tell them.
They will love kids just as much as you, but they still like their own space to not be bothered.
Lab Hound Mix Temperament
The temperament is a very tricky thing to talk about because you really don’t know what you’re going to get with a breed of dog.
The Afador’s dog breed is very intelligent, and they have great listening skills. This dog breed is especially good at training!
They are very high spirited, and they know how to be serious, but then they know how to play and have fun!
Especially when they see children, they get very happy and want to play all day with them! They are extremely affectionate to their owners and protective of their owners if they see a stranger. The perfect combination you would want in your dog breed!
Afador’s Coat
Both the Afghan hound and Labrador have either long or medium-long coats. There really won’t be any difference from their parent’s coat to them.
The coat should be smooth and shiny with fineness to the coat. Their coat can come in a ray of many colors from black, brown, gray, white, red, beige, or salt and pepper style.
Just like the famous Labrador, this breed will shed because of their fine long coat.
Afghan Hound and Labrador Mix Grooming
Dogs with long coats like the Afador have to have a lot of maintenance on their coats. They have long, fine hair that just sheds like crazy.
To keep your dogs from shedding all over your house, you really need to brush through their coat with a comb twice a week.
Dogs need to only be bathed when their dirty or after two months of not being bathed. Besides the coat, remember to check their ears for a sore or ticks hiding in there.
Get a vet to clip your dog’s fingernails because if you cut to fat, you can cut into a nerve causing your dog pain!
Lab Hound Health Issues
Not all health issues you read about for this dog breed will happen, but we want you to be aware of them in case they do happen to your dog!
Cataracts: cataracts are the start of blindness to your dog’s eyes. This can happen when your dog is very old or young, it really just depends.
Hip Dysplasia: this can be a serious medical condition when your dog’s thighbone doesn’t fit perfectly into their hip bone. If you suspect this, please go see your dog’s vet.
Cancer: there is not really anything you can do to stop this. If it happens, it happens, but there is nothing you can do to prevent your dog from getting this.
Hypothyroidism: this is common in most dog breeds, but the afador can inherit this. This is where your dog’s thyroid does not produce enough of the hormone to keep the glade functioning normally.
Hound Lab Exercise
The Afador needs an enormous amount of exercise. This dog has a lot of energy, and they need to burn it off if you want to keep your sanity.
This dog will not be fine with just a walk around the block; they need a good 45 minutes of playtime outside. This playtime could be at a dog park or even just a playtime with the kids in the backyard.
Remember if at a park they do have that natural hunting instinct so they may go after a few squirrels. This breed also is very good at doing activities such as running with their owner or running alongside of their owner’s bike.
Afghan hound and Labrador Mix Training
Remember how I said the Afador is extremely intelligent? Well, it is true, and when it comes to training this breed, it’s like a walk in the park.
They pick up on commands like it’s a piece of cake. Remember to start training as early as puppyhood.
This will get them in gear to start learning and be on a routine that you have picked for them. If you have any problem with training, just be persistent and find someone to help you!
Afador Feeding
Dog food quality is extremely important, especially with this breed. If your Afador is used for hunting, then you will want to feed your dog some great quality dog food to keep their energy level.
This dog should be fed 3 cups of high-quality dog food divided into two separate meals throughout the day.
Life Expectancy of an Afador
The Afghan hound Labrador mix can live anywhere between ten and twelve years. This is quite a long time for a dog breed.
Depending on what health conditions your puppy parents have will ultimately depend on how long they will live and how healthy they will be.
If you are worried you can always consult your veterinarian to let you know how your puppy health looks like.
What Colors Do They Come In?
The Afghan hound Labrador mix can come in a few different colors. this can include:

Afador Puppies
The Afador puppies can be quite expensive. You most likely won’t be able to get one of these puppies for less than $1,000.
If you do find a puppy for less, then consider it extremely rare. You may find one of these dogs in a rescue, but it most likely won’t be a puppy.
Don’t forget to factor in medical expenses for your dog as well into your budget.
Don’t forget to always request to see health clearance from the breeder on your puppy parents. This will give you an inside look into what medical expenses you may need to budget for.
