The Shikoku is a dog breed that is from Japan. Dating back to ancient times, this dog breed was used for hunting boars. This is a medium-sized dog breed that isn’t really seen in the United States. There are not many breeders who breed the Shikoku, which can make them hard to find.
Lucky for you, I am here to help you in your search for Shikoku puppies for sale. Below you will see some breeders who are still breeding this fabulous dog breed.
How Much Does a Shikoku Cost?
The Shikoku is quite an expensive dog breed for a few reasons. Most breeders are located in Japan. The few that are here in the United States and other countries had to get their dogs from Japan. These breeders will charge a premium in price, plus the breed is so rare to even see in these other countries.
Expect to spend between $2,000 to $4,000 for a Shikoku puppy. I doubt that you will be able to find one from a rescue because most breeders will rehome the dog you purchased if you can no longer take care of it.
Reputable Shikoku Breeders
There are not many breeders in the United States that specialize in breeding the Shikoku dog breed. However, below you will find three reputable breeders who specialize in raising Shikoku puppies for sale.
Shikoku Kennel
Egitte is the foundation breeder at Shikoku Kennel. Her breeding journey began in 1983 with the Lhasa Apso dog breed. It later grew to something bigger when she saw a picture of the Shikoku dog breed. Back then, the only place you could get a Shikoku was from Japan.
It became an entire process for her to get her foundation stock. After countless phone calls, letters, and trips to Japan, she finally got all of her dogs by the year 2000. Many of her dogs are champions and best-in-show winners.
Getting your future puppy from this breeder can be accomplished in three easy steps. First, fill out the potential puppy owner questionnaire. This will let the breeder know more about you, your family, and what you are exactly looking for.
After the breeder takes the time to approve you, you then get to submit your deposit of 500 euros which equals to $590 USD. This deposit is what gets you onto the waiting list for an upcoming puppy.
This deposit is non-refundable so keep that in mind. The third and final step is, of course, to come visit the facility and get your puppy to take home with you. Puppies can go home between 8 to 15 weeks old.
You will need to ask your additional questions to the breeder and see if she ships her dogs to other countries. Keep in mind her dogs are champions and have outstanding bloodlines, so make sure you inquire about the price. You can find even more information on this breeder’s website here: https://shikoku.nl/ This is also where you can fill out the questionnaire.
Akitsu Shikoku Ken
This breeder’s kennel is located on Sanibel Island, just off the coast of Florida in the Gulf. Before moving to Florida, the breeder was located in New Hampshire. They already owned the Shiba Inu dog breed and wanted to expand to another Japanese dog breed. This led them to find the Shikoku dog breed.
They got their first one in 2013 and began getting a few more. Genetic diversity is really important for this dog breed because, unfortunately, many Shikoku puppies have similar or close related bloodlines. This breeder has had a few litters and is dedicated to the preservation of this beautiful dog breed.
Right now, the breeder is planning two more litters of Shikoku puppies for sale. The breeder wants all people who are interested to fill out the questionnaire in the contact us section of their website. Once the breeder receives that, they will contact you when there is a successful mating or about future litters.
Remember, if you have questions about price, shipping of a dog, or even if you want to come see the dogs in person, you will need to ask the breeder. You can do that in your questionnaire or just simply send the breeder an email.

Akashima Kennel
Katja and George are the owners that run this kennel. They have both been breeding dogs for the past forty years. This breeder started breeding Siberian Husky’s and moved onto the Shiba Inu in 1992. Of course, this breeder had great success breeding but wanted to still furthermore dog breeds.
In 2000 this breeder began to breed Shikoku puppies for sale, and that is the breeder’s main focus still today. In 2004 Katja and George had their very first litter of Shikoku puppies. They are located in Canada but shouldn’t have any problem selling their dogs to people who reside in the United States.
This breeder will have quite a few litters each year. Therefore, it is important to contact this breeder as soon as possible to be considered for future litters. You may have to wait if there are already people ahead of you on the waitlist.
Another reputable breeder that you can count on to deliver you a healthy Shikoku puppy. Check them out here: https://www.akashima.bc.ca/
Shikoku Rescue
Thankfully, the Shikoku dog breed does not really ever end up in a rescue. If someone needs to rehome their Shikoku puppy or adult dog, they can contact the North American Shikoku Club. They do have their own combined rescue that only rescues the Shikoku breed.
If they get one, which is so rare, they will rehome it with people who are part of the club and other people who apply. Their goal is to keep the Shikoku dog breed out of shelters and into a specialized club rescue like this one, where they can rehome the dog properly.
You are more than welcome to contact this club and let them know that you would really like to adopt a Shikoku from their rescue. Most likely, you will be waiting a long time, so I suggest just purchasing from a breeder if you really want this type of dog.
Overall
This can be a really tough dog breed to track down and find a breeder who has Shikoku puppies for sale. I hope these three breeders that I am recommending to you give you a good start in your journey and search.
